Hjalmar Schacht was a German economist, banker, and politician, and a co-founder of the German Democratic Party. He served as Currency Commissioner and President of the Reichsbank during the Weimar Republic, and under Hitler as President of the Reichsbank from 1933 to 1939 and Minister of Economics from 1934 to 1937. He clashed with Hitler and Goring over rearmament policy, resigned as Reichsbank president in January 1939, and left the government in 1943.
