Hubert Gough

August 12, 1870 – March 18, 1963

General Sir Hubert Gough was a senior officer in the British Army in the First World War. He commanded a cavalry brigade in August 1914 and rose rapidly to command the Reserve Army, later renamed the Fifth Army, during the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. The youngest of Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig's field army commanders, he was a controversial figure whose early career also included service in the Second Boer War.
