Joseph Chamberlain (1836–1914) was a British statesman who began as a radical Liberal, became a Liberal Unionist after opposing Irish home rule, and later emerged as a leading imperialist in coalition with the Conservatives, splitting both major parties over the course of his career. He built his political career in Birmingham, first as a businessman. He was the father of Nobel Peace Prize winner Austen Chamberlain and of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain.
