Mohammad-Ali Rajai
June 15, 1933 – August 30, 1981
Iranian Islamist politician who was prime minister from 1980 and president of Iran for four weeks in August 1981, until he was killed in a bombing.
Biography
Mohammad-Ali Rajai was born in Qazvin in 1933 and lost his shopkeeper father at the age of four. He moved to Tehran as a teenager, served briefly in the air force, and in 1959 graduated in education from Tarbiat Moallem University, after which he taught mathematics.
Active in the opposition to the Shah, he was for a time a member of the People's Mujahedin before breaking with its leftist ideas and joining the Freedom Movement of Iran in 1960. SAVAK arrested him several times, and his longest imprisonment ran from 1974 to late 1978; he later said he had been tortured.
After the 1979 revolution he became education minister in Mehdi Bazargan's interim government and pushed a rapid Islamisation of the schools. In August 1980 President Abolhassan Banisadr, under pressure from the Islamic Republican Party, appointed him prime minister; weeks later the Iran-Iraq War began. He also took over the foreign ministry in March 1981.
After Banisadr's impeachment, Rajai won the July 1981 presidential election with about 91 percent of the vote and took office on 2 August. Four weeks later, on 30 August 1981, a bomb at a meeting of the Supreme Defence Council killed him together with Prime Minister Mohammad-Javad Bahonar.
