Nicolas Sarkozy
Nicolas Sarkozy (born 1955) is a French former politician who served as president of the French Republic from 2007 to 2012, losing his reelection bid to François Hollande. He was mayor of Neuilly-sur-Seine from 1983 to 2002, Minister of the Budget from 1993 to 1995, and served as Minister of the Interior and Minister of Finances during Jacques Chirac's second presidential term. During his presidency he faced the 2008 financial crisis and the European sovereign debt crisis and negotiated a ceasefire in the Russo-Georgian War.
Biography
Nicolas Sarkozy is a French politician who was President of France from 2007 to 2012. A lawyer, he was mayor of Neuilly-sur-Seine and served as budget minister, interior minister and finance minister.
As president he raised the retirement age, dealt with the 2008 financial crisis and the eurozone crisis, held the EU presidency during the 2008 Russo-Georgian War, and backed the 2011 intervention in Libya. He lost the 2012 election to François Hollande.
After leaving office he was convicted in several cases, including corruption and illegal campaign financing, and in 2025 he was convicted of criminal conspiracy over Libyan funding of his 2007 campaign.
