Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex
Younger son of Charles III of the United Kingdom and Diana, Princess of Wales
Biography
Prince Harry was born at St Mary's Hospital, London, on 15 September 1984, the younger son of the then Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales. He grew up at Kensington Palace and Highgrove; when he was twelve his mother was killed in a car crash in Paris, and he walked behind her coffin at the funeral. He was educated at Wetherby School, Ludgrove School and Eton College, which he left in 2003, and spent a gap year in Australia and Lesotho.
He entered the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 2005 and was commissioned into the Blues and Royals in 2006. He served two tours in Afghanistan, in Helmand in 2007–2008 and with the Army Air Corps in 2012–2013, and left the army in 2015. Inspired by the Warrior Games in the United States, he founded the Invictus Games for wounded service personnel in 2014, and in 2016 he co-founded the mental-health campaign Heads Together with his brother and sister-in-law.
He was created Duke of Sussex before marrying the American actress Meghan Markle in May 2018; they have two children. In January 2020 the couple announced that they would step back from royal duties, and they settled in Southern California, where they set up the Archewell organisation, gave a widely watched interview to Oprah Winfrey in 2021 and made a Netflix documentary series. Harry published a memoir, Spare, in 2023. In 2026 the family moved back to the United Kingdom without resuming official royal work.
