Rutherford B. Hayes

Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893) was the 19th president of the United States, serving from 1877 to 1881. At the start of the Civil War he left politics to join the Union army, was wounded five times, and rose to brevet major general. After the war he served in Congress and as governor of Ohio before winning the disputed 1876 presidential election, defeating Samuel J. Tilden while losing the popular vote after a Congressional Commission awarded him 20 contested electoral votes.
