Semyon Konstantinovich Timoshenko (1895–1970) was a Soviet military commander and Marshal of the Soviet Union, and one of the most prominent Red Army commanders during the Second World War. Born to a Ukrainian family in Bessarabia, he was drafted into the Imperial Russian Army as a cavalryman in the First World War and joined the Red Army in 1917. He served with distinction during the Russian Civil War and the Polish–Soviet War, which brought him into the favour of Lenin and Stalin.
