William J. Brennan Jr.

William J. Brennan Jr. (1906–1997) was an American lawyer and jurist who served as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1956 to 1990, the eighth-longest-serving justice in the Court's history. Known as a leader of the Court's liberal wing, he was placed on the Court by President Dwight D. Eisenhower through a recess appointment in 1956 and confirmed by the Senate the following year. Earlier he had served on the Supreme Court of New Jersey.
