Failed attempt on 20 July 1944 by German resistance figures — mainly Wehrmacht officers, with Claus von Stauffenberg as the principal mastermind — to assassinate Adolf Hitler and overthrow the Nazi government. Stauffenberg's briefcase bomb inflicted only minor injuries on Hitler; the subsequent coup attempt failed, followed by a purge of the Wehrmacht.
