Senator Robert F. Kennedy, candidate in the 1968 Democratic presidential primaries, was shot by Sirhan Sirhan at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on 5 June 1968, the day after winning the California and South Dakota primaries; he died the next day at 42. Sirhan, a Palestinian Christian with anti-Zionist beliefs, was convicted and had his death sentence commuted to life in prison in 1972.
