Battle of Aachen

American and German forces fought in and around Aachen from 12 September to 21 October 1944; the city lay within Germany's Siegfried Line and the Allies hoped to break through to the Ruhr basin. Although most civilians had been evacuated, the city was largely destroyed and both sides suffered heavy losses; Aachen was the first city on internationally recognized German soil captured by the Allies.
