17 June 1775 battle in the siege of Boston early in the Revolutionary War. Though named for Bunker Hill in Charlestown, Massachusetts, most combat took place on adjacent Breed's Hill. After learning the British planned to fortify the hills around Boston, 1,200 colonial troops under William Prescott occupied and fortified Bunker and Breed's Hills overnight; at daybreak the British attacked.
