Two carrier strike groups of the U.S. Pacific Fleet defeated Japan's Combined Fleet under Isoroku Yamamoto near Midway Atoll on 4–7 June 1942, six months after Pearl Harbor. Japan's plan to capture Midway and destroy the U.S. carriers that had escaped Pearl Harbor failed, ending Japan's strategic initiative in the Pacific.
