1869
Japanese civil war of 1868-1869 between the ruling Tokugawa shogunate and an imperial coalition of western samurai domains, chiefly Choshu, Satsuma and Tosa, acting in the name of Emperor Meiji. The smaller but modernized imperial faction won a series of battles culminating in the surrender of Edo; the last Tokugawa holdouts, the Republic of Ezo in Hokkaido, fell at Hakodate. About 8,200 of 69,000 mobilized men were killed, and the war completed the military phase of the Meiji Restoration.
