Indo-Pakistani War of 1947-1948
October 22, 1947 – January 1, 1949
The first Indo-Pakistani war, fought over the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. Pashtun tribal militias from Pakistan invaded on 22 October 1947; Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession to India on 26 October and Indian troops were airlifted to Srinagar. A UN-mediated ceasefire took effect on 1 January 1949, leaving roughly a third of Kashmir under Pakistan's control.
