Nian Rebellion

1851-01-01 - 1868-12-31

Contemporaries

The Nian Rebellion was an insurrection against the Qing dynasty in northern China from 1851 to 1868, contemporaneous with the Taiping Rebellion in the south. It began as bandit and secret-society activity and grew into a sustained revolt. The rebellion was suppressed, but its population and economic losses hastened the Qing dynasty's eventual collapse.
