Self-Strengthening Movement
1861 – 1895 · Era in Imperial China
Reform period of about 1861-1895 in the late Qing dynasty, after the Opium Wars and Taiping Rebellion exposed Qing military and administrative weakness. The reforms built arsenals, schools, munitions factories, shipping, telegraph lines, and railways, reviving the dynasty for another half-century, and ended with China's defeat in the First Sino-Japanese War in 1895.
