Wuxu Coup

Coup of 21 September 1898 ending the Hundred Days' Reform in the Qing Empire. The reform movement, initiated by the Guangxu Emperor and led by Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao, sought to modernize China from June to September 1898. Empress Dowager Cixi, fearing disruption from unsupported change, staged a coup with allies, placing the emperor under house arrest and executing six leading reformers.
