Operation Hannibal
January 1945
The German Navy evacuated soldiers and civilians by sea from East Prussia and the Baltic coast ahead of the Red Army. About 800,000 to 900,000 people were carried west, but thousands died when ships such as the Wilhelm Gustloff were sunk.
