The Poor People's Campaign was a 1968 effort organized by Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to demand economic justice for poor Americans. After King's assassination that April, it was carried out under Ralph Abernathy; participants presented demands to Congress and then built a 3,000-person protest camp on the Washington Mall for six weeks. The multiracial campaign aimed to address poverty that civil rights legislation had not solved.
