Proclaimed 1 January 1912 after the Xinhai Revolution overthrew the Qing dynasty, ending more than two thousand years of imperial rule in China. Sun Yat-sen became its first provisional president; the Beiyang government in Beijing then served as the internationally recognized government from 1912 to 1928.
