1911 revolution ending Qing rule, establishing the Republic of China. Beginning with the Wuchang Uprising on 10 October 1911, revolts spread nationwide, and the Republic was declared on 1 January 1912 with Sun Yat-sen as its first president. Sun resigned in favor of Yuan Shikai, who secured the Xuantong Emperor's abdication on 12 February 1912; Yuan's death in 1916 led to warlordism and division.
