Republic of China proclaimed
The Republic of China was proclaimed on 1 January 1912 following the Xinhai Revolution, which overthrew the Qing dynasty and ended more than two thousand years of imperial rule in China. Sun Yat-sen became its first provisional president. The Beiyang government in Beijing then served as the internationally recognized government of China from 1912 to 1928.
