The September 11 attacks, colloquially known as 9/11, were a coordinated series of suicide attacks perpetrated by the Islamic terrorist organization al-Qaeda against the United States in 2001. Nineteen hijackers commandeered four commercial airliners: two were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third into the Pentagon, and a fourth crashed in a Pennsylvania field after a passenger revolt. The attacks killed 2,977 people, making them the deadliest terrorist attack in history. The United States responded by invading Afghanistan and launching the Global War on Terror.
