Elizabeth II
April 21, 1926 – September 8, 2022
Elizabeth II (1926–2022) was queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 1952 until her death in 2022. Her reign of 70 years is the longest of any British monarch and the longest of any queen regnant in history. She acceded to the throne upon the death of her father, King George VI, in 1952.
Biography
Elizabeth II was born in London in 1926, the elder daughter of the future King George VI. She became heir presumptive when her uncle Edward VIII abdicated in 1936, served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service in World War II, and married Philip Mountbatten in 1947.
She became queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms on her father's death in February 1952. Her reign of 70 years, the longest of any British monarch, saw the end of most of the British Empire and the growth of the Commonwealth, of which she was head.
She worked with fifteen British prime ministers, from Winston Churchill to Liz Truss, and kept to a constitutional role above party politics. She died at Balmoral in September 2022 and was succeeded by her son, Charles III.
