Suez Crisis

October 29 – November 7, 1956 · Port Said

British-French-Israeli invasion of Egypt in 1956. Israel invaded on 29 October to reopen the Straits of Tiran; Britain and France joined on 31 October to depose Nasser and retake the nationalized Suez Canal. U.S., Soviet, and UN pressure forced withdrawal; the crisis ended Britain and France's ability to act without U.S. consent, and a UN force was stationed on the Egypt-Israel border.
