Spain-U.S. war of 21 April to 13 August 1898, sparked by the sinking of the USS Maine and America's intervention in the Cuban War of Independence and Philippine Revolution. It ended Spain's colonial presence in the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific; the U.S. took Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines and set up a Cuban protectorate. The Treaty of Paris of 10 December 1898 formally ended the war.
