John J. Pershing

John J. Pershing (1860–1948), nicknamed "Black Jack," was an American army general. He commanded the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I from 1917 to 1920, keeping American troops as a separate army rather than integrating them with British and French forces. He mentored the generation of generals who led the U.S. Army in World War II, including George C. Marshall, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar Bradley, George S. Patton, and Douglas MacArthur.
