Contemporaries

The Spanish-American War was fought from April 21 to August 13, 1898 between Spain and the United States. It began after the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor and represented U.S. intervention in the Cuban War of Independence and the Philippine Revolution. The war ended Spanish colonial presence in the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific, while the United States acquired sovereignty over Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines and established a protectorate over Cuba. The war formally ended with the Treaty of Paris, signed on December 10, 1898.
