On 11 June 1963 Alabama governor George Wallace stood in the doorway of Foster Auditorium at the University of Alabama to block African American students Vivian Malone and James Hood from registering, to stop desegregation. Kennedy federalized the Alabama National Guard by Executive Order 11111; Guard General Henry V. Graham ordered Wallace to step aside, and they completed their registration.
