Mike Pence

Mike Pence

June 7, 1959

American Republican politician who was vice president of the United States from 2017 to 2021 and earlier governor of Indiana.

Biography

Mike Pence was born in Columbus, Indiana, in 1959. He graduated in history from Hanover College in 1981 and in law from Indiana University's law school in Indianapolis in 1986, and practised law before losing two congressional races against Philip Sharp in 1988 and 1990. Through the 1990s he hosted conservative radio and television talk shows.

Elected to the US House in 2000, he represented Indiana for twelve years, chairing the conservative Republican Study Committee from 2005 to 2007 and the House Republican Conference from 2009 to 2011. As governor of Indiana from 2013 he cut taxes, increased funding for private education initiatives and signed abortion restrictions; his 2015 religious freedom law provoked a backlash and was amended to bar discrimination against LGBT people.

Donald Trump chose him as running mate in 2016, and as vice president he chaired the National Space Council and the White House coronavirus task force. After the 2020 election he resisted pressure from Trump to block the certification of Joe Biden's victory and completed the count on January 6, 2021, after a mob had stormed the Capitol.

He later broke with Trump, ran briefly for the 2024 Republican nomination and declined to endorse him, and received the Profile in Courage Award in 2025.
