Oliver Ellsworth

Oliver Ellsworth (1745-1807) was an American Founding Father, attorney, jurist, and diplomat who was the third chief justice of the United States. He was a framer of the United States Constitution, playing a role in fashioning the Connecticut Compromise and serving on the Committee of Detail, though he left the convention without signing the document. He served as a U.S. senator from Connecticut from 1789 to 1796 and was the chief author of the Judiciary Act of 1789.
