Philander C. Knox

Philander Chase Knox (1853–1921) was an American lawyer and Republican politician. He served as the 44th U.S. attorney general from 1901 to 1904 under Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt, and as the 40th U.S. secretary of state from 1909 to 1913 under President William Howard Taft, where he pursued a policy of dollar diplomacy encouraging U.S. investment abroad. He also represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate from 1904 to 1909 and from 1917 to 1921.
