William Jennings Bryan (1860–1925) was an American lawyer, orator, and politician who was the Democratic nominee for President of the United States in 1896, 1900, and 1908. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives (1891–1895) and as Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson (1913–1915). His 1896 "Cross of Gold" speech made him the youngest major-party presidential candidate of his era, and he was widely known as "the Great Commoner."
