Robert Smith

Robert Smith (1757–1842) was an American politician, diplomat, and admiralty lawyer who served as the second U.S. Secretary of the Navy from 1801 to 1809 and the sixth U.S. Secretary of State from 1809 to 1811. He was a veteran of the American Revolutionary War and a graduate of Princeton University, then the College of New Jersey. He launched his political career under Thomas Jefferson and served under James Madison until his forced resignation from the cabinet in 1811.
