Warren E. Burger (1907–1995) was an American attorney who served as the 15th chief justice of the United States from 1969 to 1986. Nominated by President Richard Nixon to succeed Earl Warren, he was confirmed with little opposition. Earlier he had served as Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Civil Division under Dwight D. Eisenhower and as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit (1956–1969).
