William L. Marcy (1786–1857) was an American lawyer, politician, and judge who served as U.S. senator from New York, the 11th Governor of New York (1833–1838), U.S. Secretary of War (1845–1849) under James K. Polk, and the 21st U.S. Secretary of State (1853–1857) under Franklin Pierce. As Secretary of State he negotiated the Gadsden Purchase, the last major acquisition of land in the contiguous United States.
