Battle of Britain

Second World War air campaign in which the Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Arm defended the United Kingdom against large-scale Luftwaffe attacks, the first major campaign fought entirely by air forces. After overrunning France and the Low Countries, Germany sought to force Britain to negotiate; it takes its name from Winston Churchill's 18 June 1940 speech declaring the battle about to begin.
