Quit India Movement

Mass protest launched by Mahatma Gandhi at the Bombay session of the All-India Congress Committee on 8 August 1942 with the call 'Do or Die', demanding an immediate end to British rule. Leaders were arrested within days; the movement continued underground until about September 1944. Viceroy Linlithgow called it 'by far the most serious rebellion since 1857'.
