Soviet–Afghan War
The Soviet-Afghan War took place in Afghanistan from December 1979 to February 1989. It saw the Soviet Union and the Communist-led Afghan military fight against the rebelling Afghan mujahideen, who were backed principally by Pakistan, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and Iran. The conflict resulted in the deaths of one to three million Afghans, while millions more fled as refugees. The decade-long confrontation contributed to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 and is sometimes called "the Soviet Union's Vietnam." The last Soviet troops withdrew on 15 February 1989, and the conflict evolved into the Afghan Civil War.
