Yuri Andropov

Yuri Andropov (1914–1984) was a Soviet politician who served as general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from November 1982 until his death in February 1984. He had previously served as chairman of the KGB from 1967 to 1982 and as Soviet ambassador to Hungary (1954–1957), a period that included the suppression of the 1956 Hungarian Uprising.
