Barack Obama
Barack Hussein Obama II (born 1961) is an American retired politician who served as the 44th president of the United States from 2009 to 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, he was the first African American to serve as president. He represented Illinois in the U.S. Senate from 2005 to 2008 and served as an Illinois state senator from 1997 to 2004. Born in Honolulu, he graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he was the first Black president of the Harvard Law Review.
Biography
Barack Obama was born in Honolulu in 1961 to a Kenyan father and an American mother, and grew up in Hawaii and Indonesia. After Columbia University he worked as a community organiser in Chicago, then studied law at Harvard, where he was the first Black president of the Harvard Law Review.
He served in the Illinois Senate from 1997 and won a US Senate seat in 2004. In 2008 he defeated Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination and John McCain in the general election, becoming the first African American president.
His presidency (2009-2017) began during the financial crisis, with a stimulus package and a rescue of the car industry. He passed the Affordable Care Act, ended the US combat role in Iraq, ordered the raid that killed Osama bin Laden in 2011, and joined the Paris climate agreement and the Iran nuclear deal. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009.
