Józef Piłsudski (1867–1935) was a Polish statesman who served as Chief of State from 1918 to 1922 and as the first Marshal of Poland from 1920. He became the dominant figure in Polish politics after World War I and shaped the country's foreign policy. Piłsudski is regarded as a father of the Second Polish Republic, which was re-established in 1918 after 123 years of partition.
