Martin Bormann (1900-1945) was a German Nazi Party official who served as head of the Nazi Party Chancellery and as Adolf Hitler's private secretary from April 1943. After Rudolf Hess's 1941 flight to Britain, Bormann assumed Hess's duties and used control over access to Hitler to amass immense power. He joined the Nazi Party in 1927 and the SS in 1937, and died on 2 May 1945.
