Biography
Ronald Reagan was born in Illinois in 1911 and became a Hollywood actor and president of the Screen Actors Guild. Once a Democrat, he became a leading conservative voice and served as Governor of California from 1967 to 1975.
He defeated President Jimmy Carter in 1980. As president (1981-1989) he cut taxes, deregulated industry and greatly increased defence spending, and survived an assassination attempt in 1981. His economic policy, 'Reaganomics', coincided with falling inflation and a long expansion but also large budget deficits.
He took a hard line against the Soviet Union, which he called an 'evil empire', but later negotiated with Mikhail Gorbachev, and the two signed the INF Treaty in 1987. The Iran-Contra affair damaged his second term. He died in 2004.
