Biography
George H. W. Bush was the 41st president of the United States, from 1989 to 1993. He was a Navy pilot in the Second World War and then worked in the Texas oil business before entering politics.
He served in Congress, as ambassador to the United Nations, envoy to China and director of the CIA, and was Ronald Reagan's vice president from 1981 to 1989.
His presidency saw the fall of the Berlin Wall, the end of the Cold War and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. He led an international coalition that drove Iraq out of Kuwait in the 1991 Gulf War and ordered the invasion of Panama. A recession and a broken pledge on taxes helped Bill Clinton defeat him in 1992.
