Timothy Pickering

Timothy Pickering (1745–1829) was an American statesman who served as Postmaster General (1791–1795), briefly as Secretary of War, and as the third U.S. Secretary of State (1795–1800) under Presidents George Washington and John Adams, who dismissed him in 1800 over his opposition to peace with France in the Quasi-War. Earlier he served as Adjutant General and Quartermaster General of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. A Federalist, he later represented Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate (1803–1811) and the House of Representatives.
