Civil rights movement

May 17, 1954 โ€“ August 1, 1968

US social movement, 1954-1968, against legalized racial segregation and disenfranchisement of African Americans. Nonviolent campaigns - Montgomery boycott, sit-ins, Birmingham, the 1963 March on Washington, Selma - won three landmark laws: the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Fair Housing Act of 1968. Legal discrimination largely ended; informal racism persisted.
