Enabling Act of 1933

German law of 23 March 1933 giving Chancellor Adolf Hitler's cabinet power to make and enforce laws without the Reichstag or President Paul von Hindenburg. By letting the chancellor override constitutional checks and balances, it was the pivotal step from the democratic Weimar Republic to the totalitarian Nazi dictatorship.
